How forces shape the airway lining, in human organoids
Grow small pieces of human airway from stem cells, stretch and squeeze them, and watch under the microscope how their cells decide what to become.
The project
Airway organoids are miniature airway linings grown from human stem cells. You will apply controlled stretch and compression to them and measure how the shape of their cells, their cilia and the cell types they make respond, with live imaging, single-cell sequencing and mechanical measurements.
Who we are looking for
- A master's degree in biology, physics, bioengineering or a related field
- Curiosity about where physics and biology meet
- Experience with cell culture, microscopy or image analysis is welcome but not required
What we offer
A young lab in an institute that brings physics and medicine together, close supervision, and the tools to grow, image and measure living tissue.

Human airway organoids for studying respiratory disease
Use our platform for growing airway organoids in large numbers to study how the airway lining repairs itself, and what goes wrong in asthma, COPD and primary ciliary dyskinesia.
The project
The lab has worked out conditions to grow reproducible airway organoids at scale. You will use them to model disease and test treatments, combining stem cell biology with imaging, omics and measurements of tissue mechanics.
Who we are looking for
- A PhD in stem cell biology, tissue engineering, biophysics or a related field
- Hands-on experience with organoids or primary cell culture
- Interest in quantitative imaging and in working with physicists and computational scientists
How to apply
Send a CV, a short letter about your interests and the names of two references.
